New England Holocaust Memorial Tour

Please RSVP online by April 27, 2012 The New England Holocaust Memorial has received international acclaim for its moving design, touching words and names, and its one-of-a-kind, outside location. Created and funded entirely by the greater Boston community, the Memorial is situated on a lovely walkway that has been transformed into an extraordinary place of remembrance. Colin Flavin, AIA, is the Founding Principal of Flavin Architects in Boston and uniquely qualified to lead this special tour of the Memorial. In a world of computer-generated design work, he still goes back to his UCSC roots of being an avid sketch artist, hand-drawing interesting buildings or architectural details that continually expands his repertoire. At MIT, where Colin received his Masters of Architecture, he was awarded the Chamberlain Prize for Design Excellence. Prior to founding Flavin Architects in 1991, he was an Associate at Benjamin Thompson & Associates, working as a designer on projects that included Union Station in Washington, D.C. and South Street Seaport in New York City, as well as some of the firms unique beach houses on Martha’s Vineyard and Cape Cod.  Under his stewardship, Flavin Architects has won state and national design awards and the firm's work has appeared in a number of publications.

BSLUGS To Attend Play at Central Square Theatre - Music Composed by UCSC Alum, Tod Machover

On Friday evening, April 27, we're going to attend a performance of Yesterday Happened: Remembering H.M. (90 minutes, no intermission) at the Central Square Theatre in Cambridge, Mass.

About the play: At the age of 27, Henry Molaison became frozen in time. After experimental brain surgery, H.M. was unable to form new memories. His personal tragedy became neuroscience's golden opportunity, contributing more to our understanding of the brain than had been learned in the previous 100 years. A scientific detective story, Yesterday Happened: Remembering H.M. explores the mysteries of his moving story, expanding on them and helping us understand ourselves. This World Premiere is being created in conversation between scientists who studied H.M. and artists: playwright Wesley Savick, composer Tod Machover, and designer Justin Townsend.

After the performance,  Tod Machover,  Composer, UCSC (Porter College) alum and Playright/Director Wes Savick will talk about "Adapting HM's Story for the Stage" in a post-show conversation with the audience.

Tod's "work over the past 30 years demonstrates an extraordinary range and diversity that enhances our definition of music itself and our conception of what it can achieve. Called "America's Most Wired Composer" by The Los Angeles Times, Machover is widely recognized as one of the most significant and innovative composers of his generation, and is also celebrated for inventing new technologies for music, including Hypersinstruments which he launched at the MIT Media Lab in 1986."--todmachover.com

And last but not least, we'll head over next door to the trendy new Pan-Asian restaurant, Moksa, for drinks and more conversation with Tod.

BSLUG Outing to New Wing at the Gardner Museum Sun. April 22, 11 a.m.

Lunch Post-Gardner Museum Visit

Join your fellow BSLUGS as we check out the much acclaimed Renzo Piano-designed wing at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. We'll have plenty of time to also visit the gorgeous courtyard gardens and world-renown surrounding galleries.  Afterwards at 1 p.m., we'll have lunch nearby at the Squealing Pig.

The 70,000 square foot new wing "incorporates ample glazed surfaces, bringing plenty of natural light to the open, interior gallery spaces, as well as allowing for uninterrupted views to the historic building and surrounding gardens." (see Euginie Kwan, 1/17/12)

If you've been waiting for the right time to see what all the hoopla has been about, this is it!
