Tour the Calder Exhibit with the BSLUGS

On Sunday, November 9 at 3 p.m. we've arranged to have a docent-led tour of the exhibit, “Calder and Abstraction: From AvantGarde to Iconic” at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Mass.

Alexander Calder's abstract works revolutionized modern sculpture and made him one of the most celebrated artists of the 20th century. In collaboration with the Calder Foundation, this exhibition brings together 40 of the artist's mobiles (kinetic metal works) and stabiles (dynamic monumental sculptures) to explore how Alexander Calder introduced the visual vocabulary of the French Surrealists into the American vernacular -PEM website.

We'll meet in the museum lobby at 2:45 p.m. Tickets are $18 each. (Unfortunately you can't use any passes or memberships to get in for less.)  After the tour, join us as we head on over to O’Neill’s Irish Pub & Restaurant (120 Washington Street, Salem, MA 01970-3545) to enjoy live Irish music.

Authentic New England Clambake Sat. Aug. 13 in Nahant

Join us for this extraordinary opportunity!

On Saturday, August 13, on Canoe Beach at East Point, Nahant (location of the Northeastern Marine Science Center), we will have an authentic New England clambake.

Under the direction of Joe Ayers, clambake organizer extraordinaire and Northeastern professor at the Marine Science Center, we will cook lobsters and steamer clams using traditional techniques.

In short, we will dig a pit, fill it with rocks and cord wood, light it and let it burn down. We then cover it with fresh seaweed and place frames containing lobsters, steamer clams, codfish, salmon, Fenway franks, corn on the cob, sweet onions and potatoes. We then cover this with a tarp soaked in seawater, seal the edges and let it steam. Hopefully, we will be able pull this off for $20-25/person (children negotiable), with an additional infusion of BSLUG funds from our coffers.

For those of you who want this real experience, it will be an all day affair. Otherwise, dinner will probably be ready around 6:30 p.m. Pray for great weather!

Join Us for a Fantastic BSLUG Theatre Night at the Huntington Sept. 17

We’ve purchased a block of orchestra tickets at $25 each to see the Huntington Theatre’s production of “Bus Stop,” a heartwarming, classic American comedy. What makes this event even more special is that UCSC alum Miranda Hoffman, class of ’95.*, who is the costume designer for “Bus Stop,” will meet with us before the play. You’ll not only have the opportunity to meet her and wish her well for this first performance at the Huntington, but you’ll also get to meet fellow alums before we’re seated. Spring Speaker Event with Prof. Paul Lubeck--Great Dinner + Thought-Provoking Talk

Each year the Boston Chapter of the UC Santa Cruz Alumni Association, aka the BSLUGS, look forward to hosting a faculty speaker for a dinner-talk event. This year we were very fortunate that the UCSC’s East Coast Regional Team made it possible for us to have a splendid speaker, Dr. Paul Lubeck, who dissected U.S. foreign policy in the Muslim world and clarified many of the complexities of that relationship for us. Our event was a huge success: 18 UCSC alums and friends gathered for dinner, conversation, and discussion at the home of Mary Jane and Peter Suzman in West Newton, Mass. The topic attracted BSLUGs who have never attended previous programs. Prof. Lubeck was a very engaging speaker. If the dinner hadn’t taken place on a week night, we would have been discussing Islamic culture and U.S. politics into the wee hours. We are very grateful to UCSC for providing us the star power for this event!

*Paul M. Lubeck is Professor of Sociology and Director of the Global Information and Social Enterprise Studies Program at the University of California, Santa Cruz. His research focuses on global political economy, civil society and information studies, and the global sociology of Muslim social movements. His recognized expertise lies in the analysis of political, economic, and discursive changes in Muslim world, specializing on Nigeria. His wide-ranging intellectual interests have produced a corpus of work that bridges the boundaries between n scholarship, advocacy and social policy. For the past three decades, Lubeck’s work has extended from organizing cooperatives among Muslim peasants in Niger, to conducting intensive urban field work in Nigeria, Ghana, Mexico and Ghana. More recently, he has consulted with NGOs from the Global South on implementation of information strategies, and advised Nigerian state governments on the regional industrial policy lessons to be drawn from Malaysia. Lubeck’s first book, Islam and Urban Labor in Northern Nigeria: The Making of a Muslim Working Class, was awarded the Herskovits Prize.

Sat. April 3 Tour of "Fiery Pool: The Maya and the Mythic Sea" Exhibit at PEM

Join us for a one-hour guided tour of the much anticipated special exhibit at the Peabody Essex Museum. Afterward at 1 p.m., we'll have lunch nearby at the wonderful Gulu Gulu Cafe.

The exhibit, Fiery Pool: The Maya and the Mythic Sea, consists of “over 90 works, many never before seen, offer exciting new insights into Maya culture that focus on the sea as a defining feature of the spiritual realm and the inspiration for the finest works of art.”

The tour will last about an hour, so that will leave you with another 45 minutes to enjoy the rest of the museum. All collections will be open to us with our admission except the historic houses and the Chinese house. This is a great deal and fabulous opportunity!

Join Us to See "Shutter Island", Sunday p.m., Feb. 28 at AMC Loews Boston Common

As many of you know, the movie, Shutter Island, based on Dennis Lehane's novel, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leo DiCaprio, was filmed in Massachusetts in 2008 and is opening this weekend. If you attended the BSLUG cook-out at Carter Smith's house that summer and came with us on the tour of Northeastern's Marine Science Center, led by Professor and fellow BSLUG, Joe Ayers, you will have seen the amazingly realistic fake lighthouse base that was fashioned for the June 2008 movie shoot on Nahant’s East Point.

We thought it would be fun if a bunch of us got together to see the movie together and to go out for a beer afterward.

Getting the Inside Scoop on the House of the 7 Gables

On Sunday, Sept. 20, a group of BSLUGs had the opportunity to tour The House of the Seven Gables in Salem and hear its history as told by the philanthropist, Caroline Osgood Emmerton (1866-1942). Given the supernatural theme in Nathanial Hawthorne's romantic novel, it was fitting that Ms. Emmerton's spirit spoke to us through our tour guide, Irene, who was decked out in a turn of the 20th century costume befitting the wealthy Salemite. Ms. Emmerton (a colleague of Isabella Stewart Gardner) was not only responsible for preserving the old Turner-Ingersoll Mansion, but also founded the The House of the Seven Gables Settlement House, modeled after Jane Adams's Hull House in Chicago, which provided invaluable social services to the many new immigrants in Salem.

After a delightful tour, complete with a hidden staircase and a gorgeous garden, the BSLUGs strolled along the waterfront. They then continued their lively conversation further down the road at the Pig's Eye restaurant.

Many thanks to Jill Blanchard who made all the arrangements, and to Johanna Umana, Andrew French, and Irene for making such a facinating and lovely day possible!

Special BSLUG House of the 7 Gables Tour, Sept. 20

A very special BSLUG event has been organized for you by fellow UCSC alums, Andrew French and Johanna Umana. Andrew and Johanna live in Salem, Mass. and work at the House of the Seven Gables*. They have set up a tour just for us on Sunday, September 20th at 11:00 a.m. sharp. The content of the tour will be new, developed by Andrew and one of the lecturers. You will learn about the history of the House and Nathanial Hawthorne. The tours on average run about 45 minutes long and include access to the seaside gardens. We’ll all be going out to lunch afterwards at the nearby friendly, neighborhood restaurant, “In a Pig’s Eye” – so, we hope you will join us!

Tickets for the tour will be $8.40. Each person will pay for their own lunch.

July 18th Cook-out and Smith Society Fundraiser in Nahant - A Wonderful Day!

Thanks to all of you who attended our Welcome to New England / Smith Society fundraiser on July 18 at Carter and Elizabeth's house in Nahant. What a great day it was - beautiful weather, delicious food prepared by Carter and Elizabeth, good friends and a relaxing, fun time. With your generous contributions to the Smith Society, we raised $820! Bill Dickinson (Cowell Pioneer Class and founder of the Smith Society) generously offered to match every dollar we raised for the Page and Eloise Smith Renaissance Society. Dr. Sandra Faber to Host Astronomy Salon, Friday Evening, April 3, in West Newton

"Iconic Images from the Hubble Space Telescope: Their Meaning for Astronomy and for Humanity"

Dr. Faber will tour the Universe using the most beautiful and notable images from the Hubble Space Telescope and will use these as a springboard to discuss the impact that modern astronomical images have had on our thinking about the history of our species and its role and future in the Universe.

Dr. Faber has been chosen to receive the 2009 Bower Award and Prize for Achievement in Science from the historic Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. She will be honored on April 23 for "extraordinary advances in our knowledge of the properties of distant galaxies, dark matter, large scale structure of the Universe, and black holes in galactic nuclei; and for innovative leadership in the development of astronomical facilities." Dr. Faber is the discoverer of the so-called "Faber-Jackson relation" linking the brightness of elliptical galaxies to the speeds of stars orbiting within them. Her work with Hubble Space Telescope focuses on the centers of galaxies, which often harbor massive black holes, according to evidence gathered by her team. She has played a major management role in the construction of the world's largest telescopes, the twin 400-inch Keck Telescopes in Hawaii.

BSLUG Tour of Shepard Fairey Exhibit a Great Time

Ok, so perhaps our elderly docent didn't know much about guerrilla street art--maybe, she learned more from us than we did from her, but the BSLUG visit to the Shepard Fairey exhibit (Feb. 7, 2009) was still a lot of fun. The ICA space was very conducive to having a big group of excited people, sharing their knowledge and experiences. The consensus was that Shepard Fairey's art is very cool and much of it beautiful. Here are some of the comments from our group:

• "We had a fabulous time. It was wonderful to meet everyone and reconnect with a taste of Santa Cruz. "
  
  
• "This was my first outing with the group, and I'm already looking forward to the next one!"
  
  
• "Many of you had insights into how to look at or “see” the art, and it added greatly to the experience. Thank you all for what you brought. I’d love to go see some more art with you in the future."

After the exhibit, eleven of us had lunch together at a nearby restaurant, capping off a great day.

Tour of the Shepard Fairey Exhibit at the ICA, Sat. Feb. 7 at 11 a.m.

Shepard Fairey is a contemporary artist, graphic designer and illustrator who emerged from the skateboarding scene and became known initially for his "André the Giant Has a Posse" sticker campaign. The Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston calls him one of today's best known and most influential street artists. His now iconic portrait of Obama was featured on the cover of the 2008 Person of the Year issue of Time Magazine.

The ICA will open the first museum survey of Shepard Fairey, featuring over 80 works that trace the artist's career over 20 years. This exhibition will include stenciled stickers from early guerilla art campaigns, screenprints, works on wood and metal, and some of his most recent work. Shepard Fairey: Supply & Demand opens during the first week of February.

Join your fellow UCSC alums and friends for a one hour focus tour of the exhibit. After the tour, we can have lunch together in the Water Cafe by Wolfgang Puck at the Museum.

2008 BSLUG Holiday Bash A Wonderful Success!

It wasn’t easy to make it to the Suzman’s house last Saturday evening for the annual BSLUG holiday bash: the very steep icy street leading to Leonard Avenue was blockaded with barriers proclaiming “Street Closed.” Slowly, but surely 20 UCSC grads with their friends in tow made it to the hilltop home with a big banana slug gracing the front door. Inside the roaring fire, fragrance of hot spiced wine punch, plates of hot hors d’oeuvres, and the Suzman’s dog, Bramble, welcomed the guests. Most of us were “old-timers” – once you’ve come to one of Mary Jane and Peter Suzman’s BSLUG dinner parties, you’re likely to return! But there were also a good number of new faces who fit right in, as slugs are apt to do given such a warm, fun and interesting environment. Mary Jane and Peter had organized the 3-course dinner with perfection. The tables were set, the kitchen spotless – there was nothing for the guests to do but relax and enjoy the delicious food and great company.

Thanks to the marvelous generosity of Mary Jane and Peter Suzman, the festivities will be held for a fourth time at their home in West Newton. For all of you have come in years past, you know this is great news. You'll not only enjoy the wonderful company of fellow UCSC alums, but also partake of an extraordinary feast.

Just check out the menu Mary Jane has been working on which includes old favorites and some new treats:

Appetizers: Crostini with black olives, pine nuts and melted cheese; Gougeres (popover-like cheese puffs); Mini-pitas with caramelized onions, goat cheese and walnuts; Hot spiced wine punch

Main Course: Andouille sausage and chicken stew; Rice; Cheesy chili-egg squares; Green salad; Assorted breads
Desserts: Chocolate triangles - fudgy chocolate on the top, shortbread crust Almond-orange crunch; A third one, yet to be decided

All this in their lovely home, made festive with a roaring fireplace. Your friends and family are also welcome! It's the perfect way to greet the winter season.

Wendy Chapkis Book Talk: "Dying to Get High," Monday Eve. Nov. 17

We are happy to announce that we will be hosting a book talk by Wendy Chapkis after a light dinner on Monday evening, Nov. 17, 6:30-9 p.m. in Cambridge.

Fellow BSLUG, Wendy Chapkis, is professor of Sociology and Women and Gender Studies at the University of Southern Maine in Portland. She will be talking about her latest book called "Dying to Get High : Marijuana as Medicine." The book focuses on the Santa Cruz patient's cooperative, "The Wo/Men's Alliance for Medical Marijuana."

We all share the common experience of attending school in one of the greatest places on Earth. Now let's talk about it. In fact, let's talk about anything and everything when we bring it to the Beantown Pub the day after Election Day.
