Join us for an informal outing to the NICHOLAS NIXON exhibit at the ICA!

"Based in Boston since the 1970s, Nicholas Nixon has captured the intimate details of family, relationships, and life as it unfolds in front of his camera. Using a large-format 8 x 10–inch camera and black-and-white film, he has photographed Boston’s changing landscape, porch life in the rural South, sick or dying people, and his own family. This exhibition surveys the artist’s prolific career and is organized around Nixon’s remarkable ongoing project The Brown Sisters, a series of group portraits of his wife Bebe and her three sisters, Heather, Mimi, and Laurie taken annually since 1975. The Brown Sisters will be presented in its entirety, and each portrait will be paired with other photographs made by Nixon in the same year, drawn from various bodies of work, including schools in and around Boston, people with AIDS, couples, and landscapes. Together these pictures underscore photography’s singular ability to capture the passage of time in incremental moments and are a testament to Nixon’s extraordinary persistence of vision.

• 11:00 – 12:30 Enjoy the Nicholas Nixon exhibit and/or visit any other exhibits that appeal to you.
  
• 12:30 Regroup in the lobby for a lunch decision. We can all go together or people may want to pair off or go alone to a favorite place. Bring suggestions. Or, maybe you want to stay on and spend more time at the ICA – it’s up to you.

RSVP: Let us know if you plan on coming by responding to Beata by Saturday March 24th. Since everyone is buying their own ticket, a headcount isn’t required, but knowing numbers will help us come up with lunch suggestions.

*There are all sorts of discounts for ICA admission if you're affiliated with a university, a student, a senior, etc. Otherwise regular admission costs $15. If you want to purchase an ICA pass for one time entry that expires June 2018 for $11, just request one in your rsvp.

BSLUG Private Gallery Tour & Reception at the ICA

Join your fellow BSLUGS for an afternoon of art, wine, cheese, and ... the '80s. A curator will lead a private tour through the Institute of Contemporary Art's recent exhibit, This Will Have Been, a retrospective on 1980s art and culture. A wine and cheese reception will precede the tour.

BSLUG Tour of Shepard Fairey Exhibit a Great Time

Ok, so perhaps our elderly docent didn't know much about guerrilla street art--maybe, she learned more from us than we did from her, but the BSLUG visit to the Shepard Fairey exhibit (Feb. 7, 2009) was still a lot of fun. The ICA space was very conducive to having a big group of excited people, sharing their knowledge and experiences. The consensus was that Shepard Fairey's art is very cool and much of it beautiful. Here are some of the comments from our group:

• "We had a fabulous time. It was wonderful to meet everyone and reconnect with a taste of Santa Cruz. "
  
  
• "This was my first outing with the group, and I'm already looking forward to the next one!"
  
  
• "Many of you had insights into how to look at or “see” the art, and it added greatly to the experience. Thank you all for what you brought. I’d love to go see some more art with you in the future."

After the exhibit, eleven of us had lunch together at a nearby restaurant, capping off a great day.

Tour of the Shepard Fairey Exhibit at the ICA, Sat. Feb. 7 at 11 a.m.

Shepard Fairey is a contemporary artist, graphic designer and illustrator who emerged from the skateboarding scene and became known initially for his "André the Giant Has a Posse" sticker campaign. The Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston calls him one of today's best known and most influential street artists. His now iconic portrait of Obama was featured on the cover of the 2008 Person of the Year issue of Time Magazine.

The ICA will open the first museum survey of Shepard Fairey, featuring over 80 works that trace the artist's career over 20 years. This exhibition will include stenciled stickers from early guerilla art campaigns, screenprints, works on wood and metal, and some of his most recent work. Shepard Fairey: Supply & Demand opens during the first week of February.

Join your fellow UCSC alums and friends for a one hour focus tour of the exhibit. After the tour, we can have lunch together in the Water Cafe by Wolfgang Puck at the Museum.
