This year we have the unprecedented opportunity to help these independent students succeed. Every donation will be matched, dollar for dollar. BSLUGS Raise $1271 for the Smith Renaissance Society at 2014 Holiday Fundraiser

The BSLUG Board thanks everyone who came to the BSLUG Holiday Party last December 6 at Kate Ellis's lovely home and also those who contributed to the fundraiser who couldn't come.  It was such a success, not only in terms of how much money we raised ($1271) for the Smith Renaissance Society, but also because it was very clear we have created a real community of slugs out here in New England.

The atmosphere of the party was very warm and merry, despite the food being cold (but delicious).  Thank you so much, Kate, for making it all possible!

The date of our spring speaker event has to be changed because we overlooked the fact that April 3 is the first day of Passover (thank you, Nancy!)

THE NEW DATE FOR UCSC ASTROPHYSICIST, ENRICO RUIZ-RAMIREZ, TO TALK WITH US IS SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 28, IN THE EVENING at Sloan and Rob's home in West Newton.

You'll be hearing more about it soon, but in the meantime, mark your calendars!

We're Almost There - Help Us Raise $1000

For those of you who were able to attend, you know that the holiday party at the Suzmans' was fabulous! The previous day's snow had created a winter wonderland effect - together with the smell of hot mulled wine, burning logs in the fireplace, fresh scones straight out of the oven and myriad other desserts and sandwiches, there was no better place to hang out and enjoy the company of fellow Santa Cruz alums.

Due to the enormous generosity of Mary Jane and Peter Suzman, we were able to make the party a fundraiser for the Smith Renaissance Society. We raised $935 which will be matched by founder, Bill Dickinson, getting us a lot more bang for our buck.

Please help us raise the last $65 to get us to our goal of $1000. Send a check made payable to "UCSC Foundation" and write in the memo line: "Smith Society Operating Fund SS009F." Send it to me at the address below. You will receive a receipt directly from UCSC for your tax deduction.

ALSO please note: we are looking for a spring 2010 speaker. If you know of a UCSC professor or researcher who will be in the Boston area during the spring semester and who would be willing to give a talk for us, let me know! Or if you, yourself, would like to give a talk or put on some other type of event, that would be great too.

Don't forget to join our B-SLUGS Facebook Group.

On behalf of the BSLUG Board, Happy Holidays!

2008 BSLUG Holiday Bash A Wonderful Success!

It wasn’t easy to make it to the Suzman’s house last Saturday evening for the annual BSLUG holiday bash: the very steep icy street leading to Leonard Avenue was blockaded with barriers proclaiming “Street Closed.” Slowly, but surely 20 UCSC grads with their friends in tow made it to the hilltop home with a big banana slug gracing the front door. Inside the roaring fire, fragrance of hot spiced wine punch, plates of hot hors d’oeuvres, and the Suzman’s dog, Bramble, welcomed the guests. Most of us were “old-timers” – once you’ve come to one of Mary Jane and Peter Suzman’s BSLUG dinner parties, you’re likely to return! But there were also a good number of new faces who fit right in, as slugs are apt to do given such a warm, fun and interesting environment. Mary Jane and Peter had organized the 3-course dinner with perfection. The tables were set, the kitchen spotless – there was nothing for the guests to do but relax and enjoy the delicious food and great company.

Click here for fun photos of the party taken by Zoe Rath.

The Annual BSLUG Holiday Party is a fund-raiser for the Smith Society Scholarship Fund which provides UCSC mentors, scholarships, and collegiate resources to foster children, homeless and runaway youth, orphans, and wards of the court. We surpassed our fundraising goal of $1000, raising $1030 at the party! Thanks to everyone who generously made a donation. This gift will be matched by Smith Society founder and BSLUG Board Member, Bill Dickinson. If you didn’t get a chance to contribute and would like to help put us over the top, please send me your tax-deductible contribution (suggested donation: $15-25 per person). Checks made payable to: "UC Santa Cruz Foundation" and write in the memo line: Smith Society Scholarship Fund Fl011F. Mail to: Beata Panagopoulos, 28 Maple Ave., Apt. 3, Cambridge, MA 02139-1130.
