"Welcome to New England" Bash in Nahant, June 28

Come one, come all to our "Welcome to New England Party/BBQ" at Carter Smith's fabulous new house in the oceanside resort town of Nahant!

We would like to invite, in particular, all those SLUGs who have recently moved to New England, either having recently graduated from UCSC or who have recently chosen this wonderful corner of the country to live in for whatever reason.

WHEN: Saturday afternoon, June 28

WHAT TO BRING: BYOB and your bathing suit!

RSVP deadline: June 18

This party is being made even more meaningful because Carter Smith is generously providing the BBQ. In lieu of a contribution towards the food, we are suggesting that you make a donation to the Smith Society , an organization the BSLUGS have supported for many years which is a grassroots, alumni-initiated effort to provide financial, academic and emotional support to veterans of the foster care or juvenile justice systems, orphans without family support or others who have been forced to go at life on their own. We would now like to target our fundraising effort to raise the funds necessary to support the position of the part-time student advisor of the program who has been playing an essential role in the Smith Society.

Please rsvp and mail your tax-deductible contributions to Beata.

All tax deductible donations received will go to whichever fund you choose: either the Operating Fund (which will directly support the position of the part-time advisor) or the the Scholarship Fund. Contributions large and small are needed to reach our goal of $1000. Bill Dickinson, fellow BSLUG Board member and founder of the Smith Society (Cowell '68) has offered to match all contributions to help us reach our goal.

Annual Wine/Beer and Cheese Planning Meeting & Elections, Monday evening, May 5 in Cambridge

Monday, May 5 at 6:30 p.m. the Annual Planning Meeting and Elections will be held at Robin Bonner's house in Cambridge. You are all encouraged to come--the BSLUG group was organized by and for us. Our only mission is to provide opportunities for New England UCSC alums to get together, enjoy themselves, network and learn.

Here is the agenda for the Annual Wine/Beer and Cheese Planning Meeting

1. Report back UCSC Regional Leaders Workshop on Sat. Apr. 26 (Paula Felsher)

2. Old business - review of March 7 event with Dean Van Den Abbeele at the Suzman's

3. New business

a) Elections

b) Event planning.

Possibilities: special BSLUG showing of Lucia Small's "Axe in the Attic"; talk by Wendy Chapkis on her new book, "Dying to Get High: Marijuana as Medicine"; excursion to Williamstown; clam bake in Nahant; other ideas??

This is your chance to become an officer or a member-at-large, and make a difference in what we do as a local alumni chapter. You can run for any office. None of the officer positions take a lot of time. A member-at-large just needs to attend meetings whenever possible, give us input with ideas, and help us out organizing and setting up events. It's actually a lot of fun, so think about it and come to our board meeting to check it out.

BSLUGs Enjoyed a Great Evening with Dean Georges Van Den Abbeele Friday, March 7

About 20 BSLUGs gathered at the warm and inviting home of Mary Jane and Peter Suzman in West Newton this past Friday evening, March 7, to hear Dean of Humanities, Georges Van Den Abbeele give a talk about "Ethics of Cultural and Historical Preservation." He was accompanied by Liz Sandoval, a UCSC Pioneer Class alum, and development officer for the Humanities Dept.

We were welcomed by hot hors d'oeuvres of empanaditas, and mushroom and cheese quesadillas. Although most of us who attended are old friends, it was great to have at least 5 new Slugs join us. Once we all had arrived, having braved the Greater Metro Boston Friday evening rush hour traffic, we enjoyed an absolutely delicious dinner of enchiladas, cornbread, green salad with oranges and jicama. Even after this feast, we still found room for a wonderful dessert of cornmeal pound cake with berries and butterscotch cream. This entire menu for more than 20 people was prepared and cooked by chef Mary Jane (and I'm sure ably assisted by Peter). Mary Jane's cookery skills and talent are, by all measures, astonishing.

Once everyone was ushered into the living room, Dean Van Den Abbeele gave an informal, fascinating talk about the areas of concern and professional debate related to preserving and interpreting significant places of our heritage. The Dean gave us vivid examples of historical preservation efforts in California which illustrated the difficulties involved such as those at: Angel Island , Manzanar , and Sutter Buttes . We could have gone long into the night, with our discussion, relating our stories and asking questions, but it was late Friday night, the end of a long week, and we had to call it a night to let people get home before the expected downpour.

The BSLUG Board would like to thank Dean Van Den Abbeele, Liz Sandoval, Allison Garcia, and Mary Jane and Peter Suzman for their hard work and generosity, making this lovely event possible.
